How to Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

The most important part of goal setting is to make SMART goals.

  • Specific - Be specific about what you want to accomplish. Use the "W" questions as a guideline - Who, What, When, Where, and Why. They may not all apply, but will get you thinking.

  • Measurable - Make them measurable. Determine what metrics you will use to measure your progress - pounds, dollars, pages, miles?

  • Attainable - Can you realistically attain what you want? Or are you setting yourself up for disappointment? Do you possess the necessary skills, or do you need coaching/training?

  • Relevant - Does your goal complement your current business plan or lifestyle? For example, if you're writing a book, is it on a topic that will showcase your expertise in your field?

  • Time-bound - Do you have an end date? If not, you'll keep putting it off for 'someday.'  And is the time frame realistic? Are you training for a marathon that will take place in two weeks? Two months? Two years?

Your goal must be specific so you can track your progress and know whether you met the goal. The more specific you can be with your goal, the higher the chance you’ll complete it.
